What is generative engine optimization?
Someone asks ChatGPT or Google's AI who to call in their town. The answer names three to five businesses. GEO is the work of making the facts an engine finds about you accurate and complete, so you are in the set it can name.
More customers start with the AI they already use
They ask ChatGPT, Gemini, Google's AI Mode or Copilot who to call, then contact one of the few names it gives. Two surveys published in 2026, by SOCi and Yext, found that about half of US consumers used an AI tool to find a local business in the past month.
Most still check before they call. SOCi found that 81% check reviews, social media or other sources first, and only 19% go straight from the AI's answer to the business. So the facts have to agree everywhere a customer or an engine looks.
